Killing in the name of the war on drugs
Guest editors: Alex Stevens, Karen Joe Laider
The Asian region is marked by a high number of killings that are carried out in the name of the war on drugs. Several countries retain the death penalty for drug offences, and there are also numerous extra-judicial killings of people who use drugs, especially in the Philippines.
This special section of the International Journal of Drug Policy will build on work presented at the first Asian regional meeting of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy, where several papers on such killings were presented. We now invite researchers in any discipline relevant to drug policy to submit articles for publication about the topic of killings that are carried out in Asia in the name of the war on drugs. These could be judicial or extra-judicial killings. Authors do not have to have attended or presented at the ISSDP regional meeting.
We will particularly welcome articles on:
- Extra-judicial killings of people who use drugs in the Philippines, Bangladesh and other Asian countries.
- The implementation of the death penalty for drug offences in China, Iran and other Asian countries.
- Efforts at national and international level to put an end to judicial and extra-judicial killings related to drug use and trafficking in Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries.
- Analysis of debates about such killings in the public sphere in Asia, including the political uses of capital punishment and the creation of public opinion on this topic.
To clarify: we are not seeking articles for this special section that focus on violence that is related to drug policy or markets unless they relate to killings that are carried out by states or states- sponsored actors in the name of controlling drug markets and users. Such other articles can be submitted for consideration in the usual way.
Submitted articles will be subject to the usual peer review process. Articles that are published in this special section will be made free-to-download for a promotional period of between 60 and 90 days.
If you would like to submit an article for publication in this special section, please use the usual submission process at https://www.elsevier.com/journals/international-journal-of-drug- policy/0955-3959/guide-for-authors. Specify ‘drug war killing in Asia’ as the name of the special section, and choose Alex Stevens as your preferred editor.
